Specialization Study in Plant Medicine

The Lifelong Learning Programme “Plant Medicine” is implemented by the Institute of Lifelong Learning at Mendel University in Brno under the Act No.111/1998 Coll. on Higher Education, and is in accordance with the Central Institute for Supervising and Testing in Agriculture requirements by 326/2004 Coll., on Phytosanitary Care, as amended.

Study prerequisites

University degree in agricultural or biological sciences.

Organisation of the study

The study is 1.5 years – three semesters long, held in a combined form (mostly online form supplemented by practical training at MENDELU or field trips) and is completed by a final exam.

Course load:

  • 224 hours of direct instruction (online teaching combined with in-person teaching, practical training and field trips)
  • independent preparation and consultation in connection with the preparation of the final thesis

The direct instruction takes 2 semesters, blocks of 2 days every two weeks (7 teaching blocks per semester).

Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Wednesday from 9 am to 5 pm, Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm. At the end of the 2nd semester, there will be a written test to verify the knowledge.

The 3rd semester is for consultations and preparation of the final thesis, and final exam.

Study content

The study consists of 7 main teaching blocks:

  • Plant diseases and disorders
  • Animal pests
  • Weeds
  • Integrated plant protection systems
  • Regulations and administrative procedures in plant health
  • Dendrology
  • Floristics

Price of study

The price for the whole study is CZK 39,900 (VAT exempt). It is possible to pay in 3 instalments before the start of each semester, it is also possible to pay by invoice.

Study completion

Before completing their studies, students prepare a final thesis according to an individual assignment. Each student will be assigned a supervisor, with whom he/she will have the opportunity to consult the thesis and who will then write a report on the thesis. The study will be completed by a final exam before a commission board.

The conditions for obtaining the certificate are:

  • 60 % participation in the course
  • successful completion of the final test at the end of the 2nd semester
  • passing the final exam.

Upon successful completion of the entire study, students will be issued a Certificate of Completion of Specialization study in Plant Medicine.

The certificate (successful completion of the study) entitles graduates to obtain up to Level III Certificate of Professional Competence for Plant Protection Products.
